Sedation Dentistry San Antonio
Visiting the dentist has never been easier.
Sedation dentistry, or conscious sedation, is a set of medical methods providing comfortable and safe treatment for those who have anxiety, and especially extreme anxiety, so that your dental visits are virtually pain free.
Today, missing or avoiding important dental work because of fear can now be a thing of the past. Conscious sedation can help with any of the following reasons:
- Fear of needles
- Dislike of dental sounds, sights, smells
- Sensitive teeth
- Traumatic dental experience
- Discomfort/impatience for lengthy procedures
- Limited time
- Severe gag reflex
Conscious sedation: an oral medication inducing a very relaxed state. The patient has a reduced level of awareness but is still able to respond to direction during the procedure. There are a variety of medications in this category.
The time frame in which they are taken is dependent on the patient and their individual anxiety levels. A consultation between the patient and Dr. Spalten determines the type and manner in which these medications are taken.
Because of the relaxed state of the patient before and after their dental visit, there must be someone who can assist them in transportation to and from the office.
Inhalation sedation: a gas that has a long history of use as an anesthetic is nitrous oxide, sometimes referred to as laughing gas. It is administered just prior to the procedure by placing a mask over the nose. The patient breathes through the nose and exhales from the mouth.
Both of the above methods are coupled with topical and other anesthetics to give a virtually pain free experience during their dental procedure.
