Skin and Aging

While the aging process of our skin has many factors including exposure to the sun, wind, and cold there is an important medical factor present in the skin’s structure. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the dermis. It is essential in the structure of the skin for moisturizing.

With age, the amount of hyaluronic acid decreases and the quality diminishes resulting in an adverse effect on our skin. Simply stated, the skin dries out, loses elasticity, and the wrinkling process begins. Along with this effect, the face loses volume which is reflected in the cheeks, cheekbones and lips.

Dermal Fillers

Restylane is one of several dermal fillers employed to restore volume and provide a smoother, more youthful appearance. Because it consists of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring constituent in our skin, it makes the treatment completely safe.

Dermal fillers can be used on any part of the face including eye, mouth, and smile lines. Its versatility extends to softening facial creases, removing wrinkles, and improving forehead lines.

In pure form, hyaluronic acid is a gel like substance that lies between the skin and connective tissues supporting the skin. It becomes an inflated cushion supporting facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume and elasticity due to aging.

As a dermal filler it is also hydrates the skin by bringing water to the surface which helps give it a refreshed and more youthful appearance.

Each dermal filler – Restylane, Perlane, and Radiesse – has specific characteristics which determines where and how it is employed on the face.

In our youth the body’s natural process of rejuvenation is at work. As such, this procedure must be repeated periodically to maintain its effect. Typically, a procedure lasts between 6 months to a year.

Botox Cosmetics

As we get older there are wrinkles that begin to appear between and around the eyes and the forehead. Known, collectively, as crow’s feet, frown and worry lines, there is a well established prescription medicine known as Botox Cosmetic that is effective in improving our facial appearance.

Botox Cosmetic is a nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles around the eyes. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes severe lines to form those areas.

Improvements can vary between individuals and they last, typically, from 3 to 6 months. During a consultation with Dr. Spalten, you will find if this form of treatment is suitable for your current physical condition.
